Every year millions of people die of hunger in the developing countries, while thousands die of avoidable diseases in the developed countries due to overeating the wrong kind of food. Surely, in the 21st Century, we can do better than this. The spread of the vegetarian diet may be the best way to correct this crazy imbalance.<br/><br/>So, think about it, and try out a vegetarian diet. It will help you to slim down, feel great physically and connect you with the other living beings on planet Earth.<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>

Have an omelette, filling yet good on calories, make it with egg whites plus 1/4 cup egg substitute. Replace regular bacon with low fat/ Canadian bacon to save even more calories.<br/><br/>3. Switch from whole milk to nonfat or lowfat milk. Use sugar substitute instead of sugar in your morning coffee or latte.<br/><br/>4. At lunch, use mustard instead of mayonnaise on your sandwich to save 100 calories (per tablespoon) . Eliminate the cheese and save 100 more calories.<br/><br/>5. Instead of a Big Mac and large fries, go for a plain hamburger and a small french fry and save a whopping 590 calories!<br/><br/>6. Don&#8217;t eat potato chips at snack time. Have an apple instead for less calories plus the added benefit of more fiber.<br/><br/>7. Substitute diet cola or iced tea for your usual soda. You&#8217;ll save 150-200 calories per drink.<br/><br/>8. Eat every two to three hours with smaller portions. Don&#8217;t skip breakfast! Eating small, frequent meals keeps blood glucose levels stable and minimizes the impulse to overeat.<br/><br/>9. Eat more healthy snacks like dried fruits and nuts, fresh fruits, cut up veggies or yogurt.<br/><br/>10. Substitute whole grain foods for white bread, rice and cereals. You will not only cut fat and calories, but whole grains have been proven to reduce the risk of colon cancer by increasing the fiber that your body needs.<br/><br/>11. Saute meat, chicken and vegetables in broth instead of butter. And speaking of butter: replace it with nonfat sour cream on baked potatoes.<br/><br/>12. Instead of Caesar salad, substitute a dinner sald with nonfat salad dressing.<br/><br/>13. Do you love pasta? Have spaghetti with marinara sauce instead of fettuccini with Alfredo sauce. You&#8217;ll save at least 500 calories!<br/><br/>14. When you&#8217;re going out with friends, watch your alcohol intake. Instead of using Coke or Seven-Up with your drinks, choose tonic water or seltzer.<br/><br/>15. Restaurants are notorious for their huge serving sizes. Eat only half of your dinner and save the rest for lunch tomorrow. Or simply share the meal with a friend.<br/><br/>16. Get moving. Walk to the store instead of driving. Walking is the best exercise you can do to lose weight.<br/><br/>17. Get more walking time by replacing coffee breaks with exercise breaks. Also use half of your lunch break to take a brisk walk with a co-worker.<br/><br/>18. Swim, swim, swim. By swimming for just an hour you can burn 500 calories. How do you teach kids to resist the siren song of Ronald McDonald? There isn&#8217;t a plate of vegetables on the planet that&#8217;s going to look as good to them as a Happy Meal!<br/><br/>You have to start slowly to change not only your own eating patterns, but your family&#8217;s as well. Like any other dietary endeavor, it starts at the grocery store. Begin stocking the refrigerator with healthy snacks like apples and carrots. Exchange good, chewy brown rice for white rice and processed side dishes, which are so high in fat and sodium. Make meat portions smaller and smaller and start incorporating more vegetables and grains in your family dinners.<br/><br/>Don&#8217;t make changes all at once. If you do give in and stop at a fast food restaurant, get fruit or yogurt in addition to or part of that meal. Make the changes so gradual that they&#8217;ll never notice their diets are changing. Kids are usually very sympathetic about animals, and it&#8217;s not too early to talk to them about eating in a way that isn&#8217;t cruel to animals.<br/><br/>You&#8217;ll be doing them a favor that will last them a lifetime. With childhood obesity at epidemic levels in the U.S., you will be setting up your children for lifelong eating habits that will help ensure a long and healthy life.<br/><br/>When people talk about detoxification and cleansing the body of harmful toxins, it&#8217;s often seen as a fringe element of vegetarians. People really don&#8217;t like to think about harmful toxins building up in their colons or in their arteries, but it&#8217;s often a by-product of a carnivorous diet. A diet that&#8217;s high in fat and processed foods tends to slow down our digestive systems, and our elimination processes are also interrupted.<br/><br/>This can allow harmful bacteria and toxins to accumulate and can create a general feeling of sluggishness, as well as a host of digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome or colitis. When we begin eating a more healthy vegetarian diet, we start to get more dietary fiber into our systems, and all of a sudden, our digestive systems start to work better,<br/><br/>When you eliminate high-fat meat and processed foods from your diet, then much of your body&#8217;s energy is freed from the intense work of digesting these foods. Everything becomes clearer &#8211; your blood, your organs, your mind. You start to become more aware of the toxic nature of the food you&#8217;d been eating before.<br/><br/>Toxicity is of much greater concern in the twentieth century than ever before. There are many new and stronger chemicals, air and water pollution, radiation and nuclear power. We ingest new chemicals, use more drugs of all kinds, eat more sugar and refined foods, and daily abuse ourselves with various stimulants and sedatives. The incidence of many toxicity diseases has increased as well. Cancer and cardiovascular disease are two of the main ones.<br/><br/>Arthritis, allergies, obesity, and many skin problems are others. In addition, a wide range of symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, pains, coughs, gastrointestinal problems, and problems from immune weakness, can all be related to toxicity. When you start a vegetarian eating plan, your body eventually cleanses itself of the harmful effects of these toxic foods.<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>

<div><br/><br/>The South Beach Diet is a revolutionary way of looking at weight loss. It isn’t low carb or low fat—it’s all about balance and learning to choose good fats and good carbs instead of foods that don’t help your body. This diet was developed by Miami cardiologist Arthur Agaston as a way for heart patients to lose weight in a healthy way and keep it off, but it was so successful that soon everyone wanted to try it. During the first two weeks on the South Beach Diet you’ll begin the process of learning to eat in a new way. You’ll eat three balanced meals a day with normal size portions of meat, seafood, vegetables, eggs, cheese, and nuts. You won’t be hungry and you’ll learn how to ignore cravings and avoid wanting to overeat. You get to have snacks twice a day, drink diet soda, and eat out, but there are a few things you can’t eat in the first two weeks. You can’t have bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, candy, ice cream, sugar, or fruit. You also can’t have beer or alcohol. But it’s only for two weeks. After that, you get to add these foods back into your diet in a healthy way. After the first two weeks, the next phase of the South Beach Diet begins. You’ll still eat plenty of lean protein, vegetables, eggs, cheeses, and nuts, but you also get to add in some of your favorite carbohydrates and sugars. You’ll learn the difference between good carbs and bad carbs and learn to balance foods so that you stay full and have plenty of energy! You stick to this phase of the diet until you reach your target weight. Then you can add in even more carbs and sugars while still maintaining your new weight. Once you know how to balance healthy options with not-as-healthy favorites, it’s easy to eat what you love and still keep the weight off.The South Beach Diet is less of a diet and more of a way of life. Of course this varies based on how much the person weighs, their metabolism and activity levels, but it is a bench mark. There are two ways to lose weight on a low calorie program, either cut back the number of calories consumed or increase activity levels to burn off more calories. You can lose weight easily on a low calorie diet.<br/><br/>A pound of fat requires that 3500 calories either be burned or not consumed. A calorie is the amount of energy in food. 500 calories would have to be cut from the average person&#8217;s daily diet to lose one pound of fat per week. A restricted low calorie program is usually between 1200 to 1500 calories per day. A medium apple has 70 calories, an 8 oz. steak about 425. One tablespoon of fat, oil, or butter has 120 calories. As a general rule fat and oil has more calories than any other type of food. Vegetables and fruits have the least amount of calories.<br/><br/>Increasing the amount of exercise per day can result in weight loss. If you walk for 30 minutes daily you&#8217;ll burn off 250 calories. The good news is that exercising at a brisk pace, say walking, for 20 minutes will increase your metabolism from 10 to 15% for two to four hours afterward. A brisk pace means that you can still talk while walking. If you can whistle or sing, you&#8217;re going too slow and if you can&#8217;t catch your breath enough to hold up your end of the conversation, you&#8217;re going too fast.<br/><br/>Combining a low calorie program with an exercise program will allow you to burn off the fat faster.<br/><br/>The advantages of a low calorie program is that you can eat a wide variety of food. There are no restrictions on what you can eat, just how much you can eat. If you absolutely have to have a piece of cheesecake you can eat it as long as you include it in your daily calorie consumption.<br/><br/>The disadvantages include sometimes being hungry.<br/><br/>Severely cutting back calories doesn&#8217;t accelerate weight loss, in fact it has the opposite effect. Your body is conditioned to react to starvation, which is what you&#8217;re doing when you decrease calories below 1000 per day, by lowering your metabolism. So you can cut back and your body will just compensate. The bad news is if you go back to a normal diet it takes your body a while to realize you&#8217;re not starving and increase your metabolism back to normal levels.<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>

<div><br/><br/>One of the most frequently cited reasons that diets and attempts at healthy eating fail is boredom. Many people simply do not know how to keep a healthy diet interesting day after day, and it can be quite a challenge.<br/><br/>Given the huge variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meats and other healthy foods at the local grocery store, however, it is definitely possible to create exciting, nutritious meals that will keep boredom at bay.<br/><br/>You&#8217;re Key to Healthy Eating<br/><br/>The key to the success of any plan for healthy eating is to eat what you like, but to exercise moderation when it comes to the less healthy foods. Improving your level of health and fitness does not mean forgoing that piece of chocolate cake, for instance. It does mean, however, limiting you to one piece. A healthy diet contains all types of foods, including carbohydrates, proteins, and even fats. The key is choosing foods that provide the best combination of taste and nutrition. After all, if your diet consists of foods you hate, you will not stick with it.<br/><br/>The revised USDA food pyramid contains five major food groups &#8211; grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy, and meat and beans. When choosing foods from these groups, it is important to eat a wide variety of foods from every food group. Doing so will not only give you a great deal of variety and keep boredom from setting in, but it will provide the best nutritional balance as well. In addition the widely known micronutrients, such as vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, etc. all foods contain a variety of macronutrients, like fats, proteins, fibre and water. Though present in extremely tiny amounts, micronutrients are vitally important to good health. That is why a healthy, varied diet is so important.<br/><br/>In addition, when choosing foods from within the various food groups, some choices are naturally better and healthier than others. For instance, choosing skim or 2% milk instead of full fat whole milk is a good way to cut down on both fat and calories. And choosing poultry or lean meat is a great way to get the protein you need every day without extra fat, cholesterol and calories.<br/><br/>Likewise cereals and breads that carry the whole grain label are healthier than those who do not. Even in the world of fruits and vegetables some choices are better than others. For instance, peaches packed in heavy syrup add unnecessary sugar to the diet; while those packed in water or juice provide only good nutrition.<br/><br/>There has been a trend lately to add vitamin fortification to food, and this can sometimes be a good way to maximize nutrition. It is important to remember, however, that proper nutrition comes from a healthy diet, not from vitamin supplements. It is fine to buy calcium fortified cereal, but the bulk of your calcium intake should still come from milk, dairy products and green leafy veggies.<br/><br/>Choosing the Best Foods<br/><br/>Knowing the five major food groups and how much of each to eat every day is only part of the picture. The other part is choosing the best foods from within those food groups. That means things like choosing the leanest cuts of meat, using egg substitutes instead of whole eggs, choosing the freshest fruits and vegetables, etc.<br/><br/>Even with fruits and vegetables, some choices are better than others. Some fruits, such as avocados, for instance, are packed with fat and calories. It is important to check the nutritional qualities of the fruits and vegetables you buy, and not simply assume that all fruits and vegetables are equally healthy.<br/><br/>One way to maximize nutrition while minimizing cost is to buy fruits and vegetables that are in season. Fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually quite a bit cheaper than those that must be shipped hundreds or even thousands of miles, and they are generally much fresher too. Of course, depending on where you live, there may be varieties of fruits and vegetables that are not available locally, so the northerner in search of citrus fruits will just have to watch the sales and buy accordingly.<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>

<div><br/><br/>A vegetarian diet offers a number of health advantages when compared to the typical diet that is eaten by the majority of people in the rich industrial countries. The healthy character of a vegetarian diet derives from the fact that it is rich in fruit and vegetables, contains large amounts of fibre and is low in animal fat.<br/><br/>In recent years the problems of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, the degenerative diseases of old age and cancers have been on the increase. Provided it is well planned, a vegetarian diet addresses all the modern health problems.<br/><br/>It is possible to become obese on a vegetarian diet, but an overweight vegetarian is a rarity. A vegetarian diet is likely to include many slow release carbohydrates, such as brown rice, wholemeal bread and root vegetables, that raise the body&#8217;s blood sugar level slowly. This has major implications for both obesity and type 2 diabetes.<br/><br/>Much of the fat in a vegetarian diet is derived from nuts and seeds which contain essential fatty acids known as omega 3, 6 and 9. These essential fatty acids do not raise cholesterol levels and so benefit the heart. They play a vital role in the brain and help to maintain the suppleness of joints, as well as ensuring good skin and hair.<br/><br/>Soya products make up an important component of a vegetarian diet. Studies show that soya actively reduced the body&#8217;s cholesterol levels and so contributes to heart health.<br/><br/>One of the key health advantages of a vegetarian diet is its high fibre content. Fruit, vegetables and whole grains all contain fibre. Fibre is essential to maintain the health of the colon and bowels. Studies have shown that a high fibre diet is linked to a low incidence of pre-cancerous growths in the colon.<br/><br/>The fruit and vegetables that a vegetarian consumes contain important anti-oxidants which combat the free radicals that can cause cancer.<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>

A busy lifestyle can make it impossible to get to the gym for a daily workout, prepare your meals ahead of time, or even to remember to pack your lunch for work each day. Being in a rush can make it difficult to stick to your diet when it&#8217;s so easy to grab something at the drivethrough. Here&#8217;s a collection of hints and tips from other busy women that will help you stay on your diet despite all the temptations.<br/><br/>Don&#8217;t try to &#8217;save time&#8217; by eating on the run, or snacking at your desk while you work. No matter how rushed you are, take the time to eat like a civilized human being, to quote my mother. Set the table, put your food on a plate and have a meal. You&#8217;ll eat less and feel fuller &#8211; and not feel the urge to snack because you &#8216;haven&#8217;t eaten anything all day&#8217;. <br/><br/>Cook just what will be eaten. Ignore all those homemaker articles that suggest that you &#8216;cook for tomorrow&#8217; to save time. Cook one portion per person at each meal. That way you&#8217;ll avoid the temptation to finish off the leftover &#8211; and teach your family healthy eating habits. <br/><br/>Get up early enough to eat breakfast at home. The morning rush to get ready may make it tempting to grab something on the way to work, or skip breakfast entirely. Don&#8217;t do it. You&#8217;ll end up eating up all that saved time &#8211; and a lot more calories &#8211; with midmorning trips to the snack machine, or fight off the blahs all morning long. Stock up on easy breakfast foods. A piece of fruit, a container of yogurt and a slice of toast are a healthy, balanced start for your day.<br/><br/>Most diets suggest that you drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day. If the thought of drinking a half gallon of water makes you queasy, there are ways to make it more appealing. Stock up on flavored bottled water in the fridge at work and keep one icy cold on your desk. At home, float mint sprigs or lemon slices in a crystal pitcher. There&#8217;s no added calories, but oh what a difference in presentation and flavor!<br/><br/>Trying to lose baby weight can be frustrating. You want to take it off as quickly as possible &#8211; but your body may not be cooperative. Keep in mind that your body is designed to nourish a child for up to a year after you give birth. Putting it on a starvation diet will kick it into survival gear, making it even harder to lose the extra weight. Instead of fighting your body&#8217;s natural tendency to store up nutrition for the baby, eat healthy portions and increase your activity level. And if you&#8217;re breastfeeding, remember that your body needs up to 1000 more calories a day than usual. Don&#8217;t skimp &#8211; you&#8217;ll just convince your body that it&#8217;s starving. <br/><br/>Employ the buddy system for moral support. Making a pact with a friend to exercise together makes it easier to stick to your resolution. Instead of meeting with friends for lunch, challenge friends to a tennis game, or take a brisk walk in the park together.<br/><br/>Remember that a healthy, active lifestyle and a nutritious diet are the true keys to losing weight permanently. By choosing a diet that makes sense for your lifestyle, you&#8217;ll make it easier on yourself to lose weight, and keep it off for good.<br/><br/><br/><br/></div>
